Nickerson Gardens Hosts UCLA Volunteer Day

On September 25th, 300 volunteers from UCLA came to Nickerson Gardens for a beautification project.  Volunteers planted 40 apple trees, provided by North East Trees, 1000 shrubs, and sodded a picnic area

HACLA CEO Douglas Guthrie and Resident Commissioner Lucelia Hooper welcomed students. Mr. Guthrie encouraged students to continue to volunteer throughout their college years and ended his remarks with a quote from Booker T. Washington, “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.”

Chancellor Gene Block and his wife Carol stopped by to see the students in action and even helped in laying down sod in one of the project areas.

Representatives from Councilmember Joe Buscaino and State Senator Rod Wright’s office were also in attendance
This year marked the fourth annual Volunteer Day where nearly 6,500 incoming freshmen and transfer students were deployed to more than 50 locations throughout Los Angeles. Volunteers traveled to each of the city's 15 City Council districts to work on different projects.
