The Seed Farm

The Seed Farm, located in Vera Cruz, PA is a new farmer training program and farm business incubator initiated by the County of Lehigh in 2009.

Through a one-year Apprenticeship Program, participants receive training in tractor safety and the use of specialized vegetable production equuipment, learn how to seed, transplant, care for and harvest crops, and how to prepare a viable business, all while operating a 2-acre market garden.  Executive Director Sara Runkel is the hands-on manager who guides the apprentices through the first year and into years two and three if they wish to continue and become Farm Stewards who establish their own enterprises.

The program is run in collaboration with the Penn State Cooperative Extension Service, Penn State Start Farming Program, PA Farm Link, and the Lehigh County Farmland Preservation Program.  The Seed Farm became a 501 c(3) non-profit organization in 2011.
