Staff Sgt. Bernard J. Coyne accepts the Spirit of Freedom award he received at the United Service Organization Salute to Freedom Gala in Raleigh, N.C., Oct. 27. Coyne received the award for his actions while deployed to Afghanistan where he and his partner diffused 10 improvised explosive devices within a 50-meter area. The USO recognized six service members with ties to North Carolina at the event.
