5/19/2011 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS) -- Time and space are running out for people interested in running the Air Force Marathon here Sept. 17.

Event organizers announced May 19 that the marathon is 80 percent full and the remaining slots are selling fast.

"Just like the Boston Marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon and so many other races, we have seen an unprecedented surge in registrations this year," said Molly Louden, the race director. "From the day we opened on Jan. 1, we have been running 200 percent ahead of last year's numbers."

Not only is the full marathon close to selling out, but the half marathon is nearing its capacity as well, with 70 percent of the available slots already sold. Air Force Marathon events also include a 10K and 5K run, both of which are nearly 50 percent full.

"It's important to us that our Airmen have every opportunity to participate in their marathon," Ms. Louden said. "We don't like having to turn away anyone who wants to run with us, but it's especially hard when it's our own Air Force family. I would encourage anyone who wants to run with us to register now before we sell out."

Price increases are also set to go into effect June 2 for late registrations. Remaining full- and half-marathon slot prices will increase by $10, while 10K slots prices will increase by $5.
