Established in 1985, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is the result of a partnership of businesses and schools created to improve education in science, mathematics, and technology. Representatives from business and industry and staff of the Fairfax County Public Schools worked together in curriculum and facilities development for the school. In recent years, local business leaders and Jefferson parents have formed the Jefferson Partnership Fund to help raise money to maintain and equip labs and classrooms in the school. As the Governor's School for Science and Technology in Northern Virginia, the school is also supported by the Virginia Department of Education. In addition to providing a specialized education for selected students in Fairfax County, Jefferson also serves other school districts including Arlington, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William counties as well as the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.

A few words about TjSTAR from Dr. Glazer

"I am excited about our symposium this year because it gives us an opportunity to celebrate our students' research. I want this symposium to be an opportunity for them to learn from one another, be inspired about opportunities at TJ, and interact with different role models across different sectors of society, including our alumni. I want our students to observe professionals who tackle scientific and technological challenges and opportunities that impact different sectors of humanity."

H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu)

As a FCPS school, TJHSST will be following the guidelines set forth by FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). A statement about this is available in a letter sent home to parents from Superintendent Dr. Dale.

One Question Selected

The TJHSST 2009-2010 One Question will be "What are the social responsibilities of educated people?" Congratulations to Ian Ladner, class of 2012, for his submission. Congratulations also to the students who wrote the other top questions: Luke Knepper (2010), Aaron Koenig (2010), Katie Mitchell (2010), and Zach Williams (2012). The One Question will serve as inspiration to the TJ community for the coming school year. The question may be addressed in various venues: classes, 8th period activities, speaker series, a seminar course, etc. Seniors who find the question intriguing might consider it in planning their research projects. Listen for future announcements about grant opportunities related to the One Question. Follow this link to read the rationale statement for the 2009-2010 One Question.
