Additional
Information |
Advice Line: |
Urgent Care is defined by TRICARE as an illness or injury that would not result in further disability or death if not treated immediately, but does require professional attention within 24 hours. If you need a same day appointment (regardless of day or time), call FAHC appointment line at 256-955-8888 or 1-800-223-9531. If an appointment is not available or if FAHC is closed, the Advice Nurse will initiate an "Urgent Care" referral. The nurse will direct you to the appropriate level of care. |
After Hours
Care: |
If you or a family member requires medical care after hours - that is not emergent, you must call the After Hours Nurse line, 256-955-8888 or 1-800-223-9531 and follow the prompts to reach the After Hours Nurse. The nurse will direct you to the appropriate level of care & enter a referral for this visit. All other requests, call the Health Center on the next business day. |
In case of an
emergency: In case of an emergency please go to the nearest Emergency Room or call 911. Please be advised that you are responsible for the cost of the visit if seen for other than an emergency reason, such as a toothache. TRICARE defines an emergency as a medical, maternity, or psychiatric condition that would lead a "prudent layperson" to believe that a serious medical condition exists, or the absence of immediate medical attention would result in a threat to life, limb, or eyesight ... |

What is an MTF?
The hospital or clinic on your base or post is a Military Treatment Facility, or MTF. "MTF" has come to be used as shorthand for all uniform services hospitals, clinics, and medical centers (including the several former Public Health Service hospitals that are now called "designated providers" under TRICARE). |
|
All TRICARE Plan options work at MTF.
Any eligible TRICARE beneficiary can use the MTF for medical care. Your choice of TRICARE plan (Prime, Standard, or Extra), however, can affect your priority for appointments at the MTF. Using the MTF through Prime, instead of seeing a civilian doctor, can save you money and paperwork. |
|
Prime is the usual choice for patients who use the MTF.
If you choose to enroll in TRICARE Prime, most of your care will be at the MTF. Active duty service members are automatically enrolled in Prime, and many active-duty family members choose to enroll. You must complete and submit the necessary paperwork to enroll in Prime. |
