Full Biography

Sgt. Walton Glenn Eller III, a shotgun shooter with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, Fort Benning, Ga., is the current Olympic champion in Men’s Double Trap, winning the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Eller, 29, joined the Army in 2006 and completed basic and infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga. He was assigned to the USAMU in January 2007.

Sgt. Eller began shooting at the age of 8 and has numerous marksmanship accomplishments. In addition to 2008, he was a U.S. Olympic team member in 2000 and 2004 and was named USA Shooting’s Athlete of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2008. He is a 5-time World Cup and National champion. He won the 2007 World Cup Final, as well as the 2003 Men’s Double Trap World Championship. He was a double medalist at the 1999 Junior Olympics and was the first American to win the British Open Sporting Clays Junior Championship. In 2009 he was named as the Military Marksmanship Association Soldier of the Year.

Sgt. Eller was earned two Army Accommodation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, U.S. International Distinguished Badge and Accessions Support Brigade Soldier of the Quarter, Third Quarter, fiscal year 2007.
