Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Hartmann is the Director of Operations, Planning and Development, Department of Defense Office of Military Commissions, Washington, D.C. He acts as the senior and single point of contact within the Department of Defense for the initiation, review, staffing, coordination and execution of all planning and development matters relating to military commissions.
General Hartmann is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He completed a Master of Arts degree under the Franklin C. Wolfe Fellowship at Stanford University and was first assigned to the 320th Bombardment Wing as Security Police Shift Commander. The general then completed law school and was assigned to Chanute AFB, Ill., where he served as a Judge Advocate, Chief of Military Justice and Area Defense Counsel. Following an assignment with the 15th Air Force as Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, he was the Chief Circuit Trial Counsel in the Pacific Circuit at Yokota Air Base, Japan.
General Hartmann transitioned from being an active-duty Judge Advocate to the Air Force Reserve component in 1991. He has held leadership positions at the base, wing, numbered air force, major command and Air Staff levels. Prior to his current assignment, he was the mobilization assistant to the Air Force Materiel Command Staff Judge Advocate, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, providing leadership and oversight to more than 100 Reserve judge advocates and paralegals attached to units throughout the command.
