Major General John K. Cullen was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1907. He graduated from high school in 1925 and attended the University of Pittsburgh, receiving his bachelor of science degree in 1930 and his master's degree in 1932. He served his internship at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh.
General Cullen entered the service in 1933 as a first lieutenant and was assigned as a camp surgeon in the Civilian Conservation Corps. From 1935 to 1941 he served as assistant post surgeon at Fort Logan, Colo., and at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.
In 1941 General Cullen was assigned as assistant surgeon for the Second Army at Memphis, Tenn., and three years later was named surgeon. In 1945, he was assigned as deputy surgeon of the Eighth Army in the Southwest Pacific and one year later as director of public health and welfare, U.S. Army Military Government in Korea. Upon his return to the United States in 1947, he was assigned as base surgeon at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.
From 1950 to 1954 General Cullen served as deputy director of plans and hospitalization, Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Air Force, and two years later he was recalled to this position from his post as commander of the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Wimpole Park, England.
General Cullen was appointed director of plans and hospitalization, Office of the Surgeon General in 1957. In this position he was responsible for all phases of medical planning to support the military mission in peace and war, management and operation of the worldwide Air Force hospital system, medical logistical support, medical budgetary matters, construction and maintenance of Air Force hospitals and other medical facilities, and Air Force biometrics.
General Cullen was appointed deputy surgeon general of the U.S. Air Force Aug. 1, 1959. In April 1961, he was named surgeon for U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
General Cullen is rated as senior flight surgeon and is board certified in aviation medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Aviation Medicine), a fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine, a member of the Aerospace Medical Association, the American Medical Association, Chi Rho Nu, Nu Sigma Nu, and Alpha Omega Alpha.
