John Burroughs Cary was born in Emporia, Kan., in 1911 and graduated from high school there in 1927. After attending Kansas State Teachers College, in July 1930 he entered the U.S. Military Academy from which he graduated on June 12, 1934 with a commission as second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.
Graduating from Primary and Advanced flying schools in 1935, General Cary was assigned to the 69th Service Squadron at Hamilton Field, Calif., transferring to the Air Corps on June 3, 1936.
In 1938 General Cary Joined the Fifth Bomb Group at Hickam and Luke fields, Hawaii, and two years later was assigned to the 13th Bomb Group with which he served at Langley Field, Va.; Orlando, Fla.; and Mitchel Field, N.Y. Named assistant to the assistant chief of staff for operations of the Third Air Force, Tampa, Fla. in 1942, that June the general became assistant chief. In January 1943 he was assigned to the Operations and Planning Division of the War Department General Staff.
Going overseas in July 1943, General Cary was assigned with the British Joint Planning Staff in London, England and two months later was transferred to the Staff of the Southeast Asia Command in India.
Returning to the United States in August 1944, the general joined the Strategy and Policy Group of the War Department General Staff, Washington, D.C. Becoming assistant chief of staff for personnel of the Fourth Air Force at San Francisco, Calif., in January 1946, the following July General Cary was named assistant chief of staff for plans for the Air Defense Command at Mitchel Field, N.Y.
Going to Air Force headquarters at Washington, D.C. in January 1948 as assistant to the chief of the Plans Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, a year later General Cary became Air Force member of the Joint Strategic Plans Committee in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Graduating in June 1950 from the National War College, General Cary was assigned to the Eighth Air Force at Fort Worth, Texas where he served successively as assistant to the director of plans and as director of plans.
That December the general was appointed chief of the Plans Division for U.S. Air Forces in Europe, with station at Wiesbaden, Germany, remaining there until March 1952 when he was named chief of the Operations Branch of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe, Paris, France.
Joining the Air Defense Command in January 1954, General Cary assumed command of the 35th Air Division (Defense) at Dobbins Air Force Base, Marietta, Ga.
Returning to Air Force headquarters, Washington, D.C. on July 1, 1956, the general assumed duties as deputy director of plans in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, becoming director on Feb. 11, 1957, and director of plans on July 1, 1957 under the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Programs.
He became deputy chief of staff, plans and operations, Pacific Air Forces, Hawaii on Sept. 22, 1958
His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. He is rated a command pilot.
