Died March 31, 1975.
Joseph C.A. Denniston was born in 1901, in Newport, R.I., and graduated from high school there. He then entered the U.S. Military Academy from which he graduated June 12, 1925, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Service. The following year he graduated from primary and advanced flying schools, was rated a pilot, and assigned to Maxwell Field, Ala. In June 1927 he was named a flying instructor at Brooks Field Texas, and later was a flying instructor at Randolph Field, Texas.
In September 1232, General Denniston was assigned with the Second Observation Squadron at Nichols Field, Philippine Islands. In December 1934, he was assigned to the Ninth Bombardment Group at Mitchel Field, N.Y. In June 1940, he was transferred to the Second Bomb Group at Langley Field, Va. He assumed command of the Newfoundland Army Air Base in August 1941 and while serving in that capacity flew anti-submarine patrol missions. In June 1942, he became assistant chief of staff for operations of the First Air Force at Mitchel Field.
General Denniston went to the Pacific theater in January l945, as commander of the Seventh Service Group, and the following April became commanding officer of the Fifth Air Force Service Command there. During this service he flew 23 combat missions.
General Denniston returned to the United States in October l945, and the following February was assigned to the office of the deputy commanding general of Air Materiel Command at Wright Field, Ohio. In May 1946, he was named assistant deputy chief of the Supply Division of Air Materiel Command, and two months later became deputy chief of that division.
In April 1949, General Denniston was assigned as chief of the Supply Branch of the of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. The following June he was appointed director of supply for that organization and in July 1949, became assistant deputy chief of staff for materiel of USAFE. His title was changed to deputy assistant chief of staff for materiel of USAFE in February l951, and in December l952, he was appointed assistant chief of staff for materiel of USAFE.
General Denniston was assigned to Air Force headquarters, Washington, D.C., in May l953, for duty as deputy director of the Secretary of the Air Force Personnel Council.
General Denniston has been awarded the Legion of Merit. He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.
