Brigadier General Monte D. Montgomery is director of manpower and organization, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower and Personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
General Montgomery was born in 1933, in Oklahoma City. He graduated from Sanford Preparatory School in Hockessen, Del., in 1951 and Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., in 1956 with a bachelor of arts degree in American studies. In April 1974 the general graduated from Central Michigan University with a master's degree in management. He completed the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in 1976, and the internationally prestigious management program for executives at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980.
Upon graduation from Rutgers University in June 1956, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He then attended pilot training at Vance Air Force Base, Okla., and received his wings in September 1957. His first operational assignment was with the 604th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron at Friesing Air Base, Germany, from February 1958 to February 1961. Upon returning to the United States, General Montgomery reverted to inactive reserve status until May 1962 when he joined the 26th Air Division, Topsham Air Force Station, Maine. In July 1963 he moved to Stewart Air Force Base, N.Y., flying C-123s and T-33s with the Air Defense Command's 4650th Combat Support Squadron.
From October 1966 to September 1967, General Montgomery flew AC-47s for the 4th Air Commando Squadron at Binh Thuy Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. His next assignment took him to Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., where he served as a T-37 instructor pilot with the 3525th Pilot Training Wing until July 1970. He then served as an assistant director of operations for the wing.
In July 1971 the general was assigned to Air Force headquarters in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Programs and Resources. While there he worked in the Aircraft Allocation Division as the Air Force tactical fighter resources manager, flew training missions in T-39s and completed graduate studies for his master's degree from Central Michigan University.
Following graduation from the Army War College in June 1976, he commanded the 3504th Recruiting Group, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. In July 1978 General Montgomery took command of the 64th Air Base Group at Reese Air Force Base, Texas. He became deputy commander for operations for the 64th Flying Training Wing in November 1979 and took command of the wing in August 1980. General Montgomery was named special assistant to Air Training Command's deputy chief of staff for logistics at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in September 1982 and became deputy chief of staff for plans in November 1982. He assumed his present duties in October 1984.
The general is a command pilot with more than 5,600 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 10 oak leaf clusters, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with two silver stars and Republic of Vietnam Air Service Honor Medal.
He was promoted to brigadier general March 1, 1983, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1982.
