Brigadier General (Dr.) Robert G. McIver is commander Aerospace Medical Division, Air Force Systems Command, Brooks Air Force Base, Texas.
A native Texan, General McIver was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1927. He attended the Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas, Midwestern University in Wichita Falls and received his bachelor of science degree in 1949 from North Texas State College, Denton, Texas. He received his doctor of medicine degree in 1953 from the University of Texas Medical School, Galveston, Texas, then served as an intern and resident in anesthesiology at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit from 1953 to 1956.
General McIver began his career as an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy and served as seaman second class in Bainbridge, Md., from 1945 to 1946. He returned to active duty as a medical officer in January 1957 and was assigned to Wimpole Park USAF Hospital in Cambridge, England. In December 1959 he was transferred to the Air Force hospital at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., as chief of anesthesiology.
General McIver was assigned at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, in August 1961, serving in respiratory physiology for six years with the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, and as a technical director with Headquarters Aerospace Medical Division for one year.
In August 1968 General McIver was selected as commander of the Aeromedical Research Laboratory at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., where he served until September 1970, when he was named commander of the Air Force hospital at Osan Air Base, Korea. While in Korea he also served as the 314th Air Division surgeon for Air Force medical services in the country.
In October 1971 he became director of biotechnology, Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., and in June 1974, was named deputy command surgeon. He returned to Brooks Air Force Base in August 1975 as commander, USAF School of Aerospace Medicine.
General McIver assumed command of the Aerospace Medical Division Aug. 3, 1978.
He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha fraternity, American Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association, Undersea Medical Society and International Academy of Astronautics. He is the author of 33 scientific publications and technical reports.
His decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
General McIver was promoted to the grade of brigadier general Feb. 1, 1977, with date of rank Jan. 26, 1977.
His hometown is Wichita Falls, Texas.
