Ballas wins women's Armed Forces Marathon

Ramstein’s Elissa Ballas ran the 37th annual Marine Corps Marathon in two hours, 53.51 minutes Sunday in Washington, D.C., to claim the 2012 Armed Forces women’s marathon championship, according to a news release from Armed Forces Sports director Kenneth Polk.

Ballas’ run, when combined with the time of Armed Forces women’s runner-up  Brenda Schrank of Andrews AFB, Md., lifted the Air Force women to the team title, almost seven minutes ahead of the Army women. Schrank clocked 2:59.06.

Other than Ballas, no Europe-based runners medaled in the Armed Forces event, which was run in conjunction with the USMC race. The Army, led by overall winner Augustus Maiyo of Fort Carson, Colo., topped the men’s team standings in the interservice portion of the race. Maiyo clocked 2:20:20 for the 26-mile event.
