Inland Search and Rescue

In 1956, with the publishing of the first National Search and Rescue Plan, the Coast Guard was designated the single federal agency responsible for maritime search and rescue and, likewise, the US Air Force was designated the single federal agency responsible for federal-level search and rescue for the inland regions. In order to meet the need for trained Coast Guard and Air Force search and rescue (SAR) Planners, the joint service National Search & Rescue School was established.

The Inland Search and Rescue Planning Course is taught by the Air Force element of the National Search and Rescue School, located at USCG Training Center Yorktown. Directions to the base can be found here. The Inland SAR Planning Course it presented throughout the United States by a team of instructors. An overview of the Inland SAR Planning course and the Basic Inland SAR course can be found using the links on this page. Application procedures, course sponsorship requirements, and contact information are found below.
