Commanding Officer

Captain Stephenson assumed the duties of commanding officer Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown in June 2012. With a staff of over 900 active duty, civilian and contract personnel, they deliver training, assessment and doctrine support services to over 15,000 Coast Guard members annually. The unit also supports U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives through engagement with interagency and international partners.

Prior to reporting to Yorktown, Captain Stephenson served as the Deputy Director for Training and Evaluation at the White House Military Office. His other staff tours include Chief, Training Division at Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma, California and as a Performance Consultant with the Office of Training, Workforce Performance and Development at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington DC.

Captain Stephenson served operational tours as Chief, Prevention Department Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Supervisor of Marine Safety Detachments Grand Haven, Michigan and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, as a Marine Inspector at Marine Safety Office New Orleans, Louisiana and as a deck watch officer onboard Coast Guard Cutters CHEROKEE and MORGANTHAU.

Originally from California, Captain Stephenson entered the Coast Guard through the Direct Commission Officer program in 1990. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, a Master of Management degree from Aquinas College and a Master of Arts degree in Education from San Diego State University. He also completed the Merchant Marine Industry Training program with the Lake Carriers Association in Cleveland, Ohio. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals with operational distinguishing device, three Coast Guard Achievement Medals with operational distinguishing device and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation. Additionally, Captain Stephenson is authorized to wear the Presidential Service Badge.
