The Genetics of Development and Disease Branch (GDDB) seeks to understand the function of genes and signaling pathways using mouse model systems. Our scope includes processes affecting diabetes, metabolism, obesity, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. The branch consists of five principal investigators:
- Rick Proia studies the functions of sphingolipids, a special type of lipid that conveys information to cells.
- Chuxia Deng focuses on processes involved in normal development and tumor formation, with an emphasis on breast cancer.
- Sean Lee seeks to understand how perturbations during normal cellular development can lead to childhood cancer.
- Alexandra McPherron studies how muscle development can affect diabetes and metabolism.
- Elisabetta Mueller focuses on the gene expression programs responsible for fat cell development.
