Rolla Water Resources Luncheon Series

Rolla Water Resources Luncheon Series Schedule

PDH Participation Form

Background:

During a 14-year stay in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, I was an active participant in a group called the Champaign-Urbana Hydraulic Engineering Luncheon Series, which had been operating since 1954. The Hydraulic Engineering Luncheon Series was a non-dues, informal group that met monthly from September through May (to follow the University calendar) for the purpose of listening to a water-related seminar over lunch. The only requirement for membership was to show up for a luncheon.

The Hydraulic Engineering Luncheon Series was a very successful integration of private, public, and academic professionals (and students) in the water area, providing a forum for technical exchange of ideas and networking among professionals of like interest. The seminars ranged for academic presentations of cutting-edge research findings to practical applications of hydrologic and hydraulic design theory. The group was headed by the “Water Master” whose chief duty was to arrange for the monthly speakers and open and close the meeting. I served as the Water Master of this group from 2000 to 2005.

Given the valuable professional interactions, networking, and technical transfer offered by this kind of venue, I have met with Charles Patterson (Allgeier, Martin and Associates), Cesar Mendoza (Missouri University of Science and Technology), and Shane Barks (U.S. Geological Survey) and we have decided to test a similar endeavor here in Rolla. For the 2009-2010 school year, we will hold bimonthly meetings of what we are tentatively calling the Rolla Water Resources Luncheon Series, with the first one being September 24, 2009 at the U.S. Geological Survey, 1400 Independence Drive. If the seminars are well received and attended, we plan to continue this effort in future years and may even consider monthly meetings depending on colleague interest and speaker availability.

Please pass this information to anyone that you think will have interest in this activity. Anyone who would like to be added to the email notification should send an email to bholmes@usgs.gov.
