SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Surface Navy Association (SNA) announced the winner of the Arleigh Burke Award for Surface Warfare Operational Excellence in a letter Dec. 15.

Chief Hospital Corpsman Jason E. Adams of USS Russell (DDG 59) received a letter congratulating him on his selection.

SNA president, retired Vice Adm. Ronald A. Route, wrote the letter which said, "The purpose of this award is to recognize superior achievement in the operational aspects of surface warfare by qualified Surface Warfare Officers and Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialists. Nominees for this award are proposed by the battle group, amphibious ready group, forward deployed Navy forces unit operational commanders and ship squadron commanders. Clearly, this award focuses on operational performance by junior leaders."

The SNA will present the award to Adams Jan. 12, at the SNA's annual awards luncheon held during the association's 24th National Symposium. The symposium will take place from Jan. 10-12, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Crystal City, Va.

Route also wrote in the letter to Adams, "on behalf of all the members of the Surface Navy Association, I would like to pass along the high esteem and deep gratitude we hold for the important contributions you continue to make to the surface warfare community, the United States Navy, and our great nation."
