Check out the 2010 All-Europe basketball teams

Stripes will print the 2010 All-Europe basketball teams in Thursday’s European edition, and thanks to the good folks at AFN, you’ll get a chance three days later to see many of the players listed there for yourself.

AFN plans to re-run all six 2010 DODDS-Europe high school championship games from noon-7 p.m. Sunday on the Pentagon Channel, just in case that morning’s NCAA Final Four doubleheader, at midnight and 2:30 a.m., and the 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. repeat telecasts of those games, all on AFN-Sports, isn’t quite going to be enough to sate your basketball appetite this Easter Sunday.

Lancer matmen expand their horizons

Among the 2,662 wrestlers who’ll be competing this week at the National High School Coaches Association’s 2010 National Wrestling Championships will be two wrestlers from Lakenheath High School, Stripes reader Holly Parrish informed us Monday.

Parrish’s son Lance, second in Europe this season at 140 pounds, will be wrestling in the sophomore division at the Nationals. Parrish’s teammate, senior Derek Franco, the European 160-pound champion, will find his opposition in the 21st annual senior division portion of the tournament. Both wrestlers qualified for Nationals by winning or placing second in their state meets, in their case February's 2010 European championships.

This year, those who are willing to back their interest in wrestling with cash may watch the matches on pay-per-view Webcasts. Details are available at www.nhsca.com/ppv/cfm.

Still on target

European rifle champion Christina Lowry of Patch and Hohenfels marksman Sarah Adams will depart Monday for their highest level of competition to date – the Junior ROTC National Air Rifle Championships in Anniston, Ala., on Friday and Saturday.

And this time, according to Hohenfels coach Bruce Andrews, anyone who wants to follow the progress of the Europe-based shooters can do so on the Web site www.odcmp.com. Competition begins at 2 p.m. CET on Friday and 6 p.m. CET on Saturday. Andrews added that once the competition starts, the Web site will provide a video feed from the firing-point monitors. Lowry will be firing from Point 50 and Adams from Point 75.

Chat-gap narrows in Formula I

Stripes is often accused, rightly, of giving short shrift to the big-time local sports scene, where world-class soccer and motor sports, for example, often take place  just a short drive away from where its readers are stationed.

That’s especially true when it comes Formula I racing, the super-model of the motor sports world. Longtime readers will recall how my late father-in-law, Randy Barnett, blanketed this event for years as Stripes’ motor editor. Since his retirement, however, we’ve had no one able to specialize in this field.

Hoops showdown in the cards

The 2010 U.S. Forces-Europe basketball championship tournaments for men and women will liven up the Kaiserslautern Military Community March 24-28, USAFE sports director Tom Burkett has announced.

The 12-team men’s tournament will be played exclusively at Ramstein Southside, beginning at 9 a.m. March 24. Semifinals are scheduled for March 27 and the third-place and championship games for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on March 28.
