General Ray Henault paid an official visit to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, from 20-21 September, marking the first time that a Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee has visited this important aspirant country.

“NATO membership means a great deal to this proud country,” said Gen. Henault.  “I have witnessed first-hand your country’s earnest efforts to realize your desire to join the NATO Alliance.  In my opinion, the ongoing Defence Review represents the right approach for defence reform that, with adequate funding and the relevant political reforms, will facilitate membership.”

The Chairman was hosted by the Chief of Defence Lieutenant-General Miroslav Stojanovski.  The two met with President Branko Crvenkovski, as well as Minister Antonio Milososki of Foreign Affairs and the Defence Minister, Mr. Lazar Elenovski, to discuss defence reform progress towards NATO membership.

Gen Henault also passed on his gratitude for troop contributions to NATO operations.  “The Alliance is grateful for your support to our operations, especially your increased contribution to our most important mission in Afghanistan,” added Gen Henault. “NATO also appreciates how the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia remains a positive and moderating factor in the region, including through the valuable work as a member of the Adriatic Charter, and with regard to the future status of Kosovo.”

Before leaving, the Chairman encouraged the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to build on its successes and push forward with its defence and political reforms that are necessary to meet NATO standards. “Your country is progressing well and remains a good candidate for membership, but is encouraged to keep up the hard work to meet NATO’s performance goals and realize its aspirations to join the Alliance.”
