Intelligence Research Specialist
Intelligence Research Specialists collect, evaluate, analyze and extract information from various sources for national and international investigations involving terrorist activities, arson rings, traditional and non-traditional organized crime groups, and compile it into analytical reports and graphs.
Intelligence Research Specialist
The primary purpose of the Intelligence Research Specialist (IRS) occupations within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) involves gathering and assembling information on major complex, conspiratorial-type (multi-defendant) investigations of such targets as firearms and narcotics trafficking organizations, arson rings, traditional and non-traditional organized crime groups, and equivalent criminal conspiracies. In doing so, they apply the principles and techniques of inductive and deductive reasoning, and the knowledge of either a geographical area or a functional area to produce finished intelligence reports based on a review of data from various sources. They interpret and project existing data to fill gaps in information, and review and evaluate finished intelligence reports from the point of view of their specific subject-matter field(s).
- Assigned to either a Field Division Office or an Intelligence Field Office, and represents that organization, as well as the Bureau, in performing liaison and coordination functions with counterparts in other intelligence organizations.
- Responsible for performing intelligence research assignments within a defined area, and/or for performing parts of more complex assignments which include all aspects of an assigned area.
- Performs in-depth intelligence analyses in support of the investigative operations through the use of a variety of intelligence-gathering methods such as link analysis, visual investigative analyses, and telephone toll record analyses.
- Prepares intelligence analyses to develop detailed analytical reports and to present briefings on activities of criminal targets.
- Develops and maintains computerized databases to generate statistical and relational reports.
- Provides information and advice on significant and critical intelligence trends, developments, and changes in procedures.
- Provides intelligence information by extracting, compiling, and analyzing factual information in response to requests from Special Agents and other organizations.
- Participates in the review of intelligence issues as it relates to trends, changes in procedures and the development of improved procedures for the collection, storage, and retrieval of intelligence information.
- Participates in working groups, committees, task forces, and conferences to exchange information, resolve technical problems, and coordinate multi-Divisional activities.
- Serves as a primary source of intelligence information for Special Agents and provides expert technical advice and consultation in preparing cases for trial.
