Visiting Research Professorships

Each year SSI offers one or two visiting research professorships. These are research positions with no teaching and very limited administrative duties. The successful candidate will advance his or her own research agenda while simultaneously producing SSI studies on relevant strategic topics which will be distributed to military leaders, government officials, civilian academics, and the global strategic community.

Benefits

The professorships are authorized under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act and are fully funded. The visiting research professor remains an employee of his or her current educational institution at his or her current salary. The Army War College reimburses the current employing institution for salary and benefits. The War College offers generous travel and research support, and may also provide relocation assistance to the successful candidate.

In addition to the excellent Army War College library, the adjoining Military History Institute archive, and the assets of nearby Washington D.C., SSI faculty draw on the expertise of colleagues who are active duty and retired military officers, members of the Foreign Service, representatives from the Intelligence Community, and civilian scholars. SSI’s contacts in the Army staff and elsewhere in the defense policy community provide visiting professors an opportunity to observe the defense policy process from within – as well as the chance to influence it.

Qualifications

The successful candidate for these professorships must have a strong record of scholarly research and publication, and the potential for drawing important policy and strategy implications from their work. We are particularly interested in research on the interagency process, American grand strategy, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, and net assessment, but any topic with importance for American defense policy will be considered. Primary criteria for selection include the likelihood of producing studies relevant to SSI's core audience, and research interests that fill a gap in SSI's staff expertise.

The successful candidate must be eligible to return to his or her employing institution following their appointment at SSI. Applicants may not be students or employees of for-profit consulting firms, and must be US citizens.
