Thomas A. Burgess, was appointed as the Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for Acquisition Program Support, Office of Acquisition and Logistics at the Department of Veterans Affairs on July 17, 2011.

Mr. Burgess has 35 years of military and commercial experience in acquisition, contracting, program management, logistics, and operations.  He retired from the U.S. Army as a Colonel in 2003.  During his military career he held a variety of key operational command and staff assignments, as well as key industrial and program management assignments managing both U.S. Army and joint military programs.  After retiring from military service, Mr. Burgess joined the commercial sector where he served in a variety of senior executive positions with profit and loss, corporate growth, and customer service responsibilities.  After retiring from industry, he joined the Department of Veterans Affairs in January 2010.

Mr. Burgess is a member of numerous professional organizations including the National Contract Management Association (NCMA), the Society of Logistics Engineers (SOLE), the U.S. Army War College Foundation (charter member), and the Disabled American Veterans (life member).  He is also a member of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Program Management Board — the federal government’s senior advisory forum on program management.  He has Masters Degrees from the University of Southern California (Systems Management) and the Florida Institute of Technology (Contracting and Acquisition Management), as well as a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of New Hampshire in Business Administration.  Mr. Burgess is also a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and the Executive Leadership and Strategic Impact Program at Dartmouth College.
