2010 Census Operational News Briefing — Director Robert M. Groves will address the media Monday, April 12 at 9 a.m. at the National Press Club in Washington on the topic of “It's Not Too Late to Mail Back Your Census Form.” This is a series of news briefings updating the media on 2010 Census operations. (A media advisory is scheduled for release today.)

Census Bureau Announces Countdown to Return 2010 Census Forms by Mail — In an effort to encourage everyone to mail back 2010 Census forms by April 16, thousands of volunteers in more than 6,000 neighborhoods plan to participate in “March to the Mailbox” parades, marches, walks, rallies and motorcades on Saturday, April 10. (A media advisory is scheduled for release today.)

There are Three Days Left to Mail Back Census Forms — There will be a news release for each state showing its current 2010 Census mail participation rate and a reminder to residents from Census Bureau Director Robert Groves to fill out and mail back their census forms. Households that miss the mail-back deadline will likely receive a visit from a census taker. (Scheduled for release April 14.)

2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour — The Road Tour is rolling to its final destinations this month, and it has been a huge part of the 2010 Census civic awareness and outreach campaign. Its stops and exhibits included treks to more than 800 events, including the Super Bowl, national auto racing events, NBA and NCAA basketball games, San Francisco's Chinese New Year Parade, and more. The last stops ahead include the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., and a baseball game in Baltimore.

2010 Census Blogs — Follow the latest news about the census on several key blogs on the 2010 Census Web site. The “2010 Census Director's Blog” provides updates from Census Bureau Director Robert Groves. “The Whole Story: Real People, Real Questions, Real Answers” lays out the facts on key issues of concern to the public. <http://2010.census.gov/2010census/>

Voting and Registration in the Election of November 2008 — This report examines levels of voting and registration in the most recent presidential election, the characteristics of citizens who reported either registering or voting in the election and the reasons why some registered individuals did not vote. The data are based on the November 2008 Current Population Survey. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-April.)

Educational Attainment in the United States: 2009 — Are women more likely to earn a college degree than men? How much more is an advanced degree worth in earnings? Tables from the Current Population Survey present national data on the highest level of education achieved by a wide range of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. These include age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, household relationship, citizenship and nativity. Included as well are historical tables on mean earnings by level of attainment. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late April.)

Economic Characteristics of Households in the United States: Third Quarter 2008 — This report examines the roles of government-sponsored benefit programs and the labor market in helping people cope with the current economic climate. Specifically, it presents data on average monthly income, participation in government-sponsored social welfare or insurance programs and labor force activity during the period. The data are from the 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation; they do not supersede the official income estimates released in September 2009. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late April.)

Geographical Mobility: 2009 — Data from the Current Population Survey present national-level data on who moves, how far and why. Data are broken out by regions, race, income level, owners vs. renters and more. Included as well are historical tables on the mover rate. Also included are historical tables. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late April.)

Economic

Finances of Selected State and Local Government Employee Retirement Systems: 4th Quarter 2009 — This quarterly survey provides national summary data on the revenues, expenditures and composition of assets of the 100 largest state and local public employee retirement systems in the United States. These 100 systems comprise 89.4 percent of financial activity among such entities, based on the 2007 Census of Governments. This survey presents the most current data about investment decisions by state and local public employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. These data tables are published four months after each calendar quarter and show national financial transactions and trends for the past six years. (Scheduled for release in April.)

2007 Economic Census: Manufacturing Geographic Area Series — This is a series of state, county, place and metro area data files on the manufacturing sector (NAICS 31). These include data for industries such as bottled water, plastic bottles, breakfast cereal, retail bakery products, mobile homes, nitrogenous fertilizers and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released through May 2010. (Tentatively scheduled for release in April.)

Facts for Features

Father's Day Centennial — To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Father's Day celebration, the Census Bureau presents a collection of statistical information from its demographic and economic subject areas honoring dear ol' dad. (Scheduled for release April 20.)

The Fourth of July — The Census Bureau wishes the nation a happy birthday by igniting a charge of fun and interesting data. A collection of statistics on subjects such as flags, fireworks and food usher in the nation's 234th birthday. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early May.)

Profile America and Al Día (Spanish) for April and May — Profile America segments range from good starts for children in “Kindergarten” (April 21) to celebrating the healing touch in “Nurses Week” (May 6).

It's Not Too Late to Return Your 2010 Census — Communities Plan 'March to the Mailbox' — April 8 — Communities across the country with low mail participation rates will hold parades, marches and other events April 10 to encourage participation in the 2010 Census. An inaccurate census count could result in an unfair distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds annually.

How to Get Help Completing the 2010 Census Form — April 7 — The main avenue for assistance and information is on the 2010 Census Web site. There are also 30,000 questionnaire assistance centers across the country and toll-free help hotlines.

Second Round of Census Forms Mailed to 40 Million Households — April 6 — Households in areas where mail response has traditionally been low will receive a replacement 2010 Census questionnaire.

Dorothy Height, Karl Rove and Other Well Known Americans Remind Residents It's Not Too Late to Mail Back Census Forms — April 5 — Civil rights legend Dorothy Height and former presidential senior adviser Karl Rove are the newest additions to a growing list of well-known Americans who have recorded public service announcements for the 2010 Census. The list includes President Obama, Miss America Caressa Cameron, Donny Osmond, Olympic athletes, major league baseball players, mayors and members of Congress.

Cities Across America Celebrate Census Day and Remind Residents to Mail Back Census Forms — March 31 — Those who haven't completed their 2010 Census questionnaire are urged to spend a few minutes on Thursday, April 1 — Census Day — to fill out their form and mail it back, taking part in a civic event that benefits every U.S. resident.

2009 Summary of State and Local Government Tax Revenue: 4th Quarter — March 30 — Tax revenues grew in the fourth quarter, marking the first quarter of positive growth in five quarters. Individual Income Tax and General Sales Tax revenues continued to decline, while Corporate Income Tax and Property Tax revenue increased. This summary shows quarterly tax revenue data on property, sales, license, income and other taxes. Data are shown for individual state governments as well as national-level estimates of total state and local taxes, including 12-month calculations. This quarterly survey has been conducted continuously since 1962.

Facts for Features

2010 Hurricane Season — April 18 — The north Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and lasts through November. The Census Bureau produces timely local data that are critical to emergency planning, preparedness and recovery efforts <http://www.census.gov/newsroom/emergencies/>. This edition of Facts for Features highlights the number of people living in areas that could be most affected by these dramatic acts of nature. It also takes a look at the famous Labor Day storm of 1935 and Hurricane Donna from 1960.

The Big Form — The U.S. Census Bureau's Giant 2010 Census Form Tour is part of a large-scale effort to encourage households to take 10 minutes to fill out and mail back their census forms. The 20-foot-high forms went on display at popular public sites in a number of major cities, such as Times Square in New York, Union Station in Washington, and Daley Plaza in Chicago.
