MONROVIA, Liberia – Armed Forces of Liberia soldiers learned new intelligence skills at Camp Ware, Aug. 27-Sept. 7.

Staff Sgt. David Jeffcoat, Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Africa S2 chief, taught 17 AFL intelligence officers and analysts.

“The students are very engaging. They have an advanced grasp of the topics,” Jeffcoat said. “The goal of the class is to enhance their organic capabilities in the realm of intelligence preparation of the operating environment, collection management and advanced analysis.”

Intelligence is an important part of any operational military. Soldiers working in the field need to be able to provide key information on events and potential threats to their commanders so they are able to make informed decisions on how best to execute a mission while protecting their troops and assets.

Sgt. Jeffcoat was sent to Liberia to help Operation Onward Liberty in its mission to mentor and advise the members of the AFL as they seek to establish themselves as a professional military that is operationally capable and is a force for good among the Liberian people.

“We want to lay a sound conceptual foundation upon which the mentors can build,” he said.

Sgt. Jeffcoat said even though he was only in Liberia for a short time, he enjoyed working with the AFL.

“They’re a lot of fun to work with. They dynamics in the group are comparable to what I see in the Marine Corps. There is a lot of camaraderie; they’re very close-knit.”
