Unemployment Insurance

Very soon, the way you enter the Unemployment Benefits Online system will change. Read more about this change.

Unemployment Insurance (UI) is temporary income:
  • For eligible workers
  • Who lose their jobs
  • Through no fault of their own

To collect benefits, you must be ready, willing, and able to work.

To qualify for UI benefits, you must have enough work and wages in covered employment. In New York State, employers pay a tax that funds UI. We do not deduct it from your paycheck. The Department of Labor decides if you qualify for benefits.

Extended Benefits (Last updated September 17, 2012)

The federal government has approved the return of the Extended Benefits (EB) program in New York State. New York State may now provide up to 20 weeks of EB benefits.  However, the weeks of available benefits in Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) were reduced in Tier 1 and Tier 3. For details, please see the EUC/EB Deadline Chart. Please continue to claim weekly benefits in the usual manner and check this website for updates on the benefit extension.  For an estimate of the number of weeks you may qualify for, see the Benefits Calculator or Chart.

Note:  The federal EUC and EB programs are scheduled to end on December 30, 2012.  You will not be able to collect any EUC or EB benefits after that date.
