A pair of Defense Logistics Agency Finance teams squared off in the finals of the McNamara Headquarters Complex 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Oct. 23. The championship came down to a half-court, 30-minute game in which team “Obligated to Score” beat “Bad Assets,” 16-11.
Obligated to Score team captain Jon Mowl played on the Gallaudet University Bison basketball team and was the university’s Male Athlete of the Month in February 2009. Two members of the winning team are hearing impaired. Gallaudet University is a federally chartered university in Washington, D.C., for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Jamaine Lowery, HQC Fitness Center fitness specialist and tournament organizer called Mowl “an awesome basketball player.”
“The team really played well together; they rocked the tournament,” Lowery said.
Despite relatively low turnout for the double-elimination tournament, Lowery said he was extremely happy about the outcome.
“Even though we only had four teams register, I was amazed that we made it happen with four teams,” he said. “This is my first year coordinating this tournament, and I think a lot of people were hesitant to sign up for this year’s tournament.”
He noted the 2011 tournament had to be canceled because construction on the complex affected the HQC basketball court.
“We got a bigger response this year than I expected,” he said.
Throughout the tournament, Lowery received emails from team members with positive feedback and encouragement for more tournaments.
“I am already excited for next year’s tournament,” Lowery said. “I hope to have a lot more teams register.”
The 2013 HQC 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is planned for April.
