He volunteered for the Army from an internment camp & was assigned to the Army's Military Intelligence Service, which was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal last year along with soldiers from the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team - highly decorated segregated units of mostly Japanese-Americans.

His daughter stated that her father "feels like joining the Army, going to the camp, fighting in the war, and fighting discrimination -- these were all things he did so that we have this precious right to vote." Regarding the attention his voting has received she said “he’d be thrilled it encouraged others to vote. . . . That would be the ultimate honor for him.”

We salute Mr. Tanabe and thank him for his service & long standing patriotism!

  21. 34 years ago today, on Oct. 20, 1978, President Carter signed a bill into law that abolished the Women's Army Corps (WAC) as a separate Corps of the Army. This allowed women more equal rights regarding promotions, assignments & military protocol and signaled an increasingly important role for women within the Army.
