13, 1968, while serving as a squad leader in B Company, 1/22nd Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, Sgt Carter's company came under fire from enemy rockets & he continued to fire his machine gun and suppress the enemy until assistance arrived even though he was wounded. His heroic actions saved the lives of his comrades & helped prevent the enemy from penetrating the perimeter. We salute him.

Soldier, in a casket that bore the words "An Unknown American who gave his life in the World War," was later buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb of the Unknowns rests on top of his grave.

He volunteered for the Army from an internment camp & was assigned to the Army's Military Intelligence Service, which was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal last year along with soldiers from the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team - highly decorated segregated units of mostly Japanese-Americans.

His daughter stated that her father "feels like joining the Army, going to the camp, fighting in the war, and fighting discrimination -- these were all things he did so that we have this precious right to vote." Regarding the attention his voting has received she said “he’d be thrilled it encouraged others to vote. . . . That would be the ultimate honor for him.”

omb Group. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions he took & the emergency landing of his damaged plane that saved his crew in December 1944. His other commendations included the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Thank you for your service & RIP.

Although his plane with his remains still inside was found in Germany more than one year ago, the 21-year-old Lt was just recently officially identified. James' older brother Earl was killed with his entire crew in a B-24 crash in Europe two months before James was shot down and was also missing until a few years ago.
