Remedial action contractors developed a greener cleanup strategy to address acid mine drainage at the Elizabeth Mine in Stratford, VT. The strategy includes using bio-based fuel and fuel conservation practices for extensive excavation and soil cap construction; salvaging and segregating excavated materials for onsite topsoil "manufacturing" or slope stabilization; exploring innovative methods to better control stormwater runoff and minimize soil erosion; selecting manufactured products that are verified as environmentally friendly; and efforts to accelerate the return of native flora and fauna in disturbed areas.
