Video by Airman 1st Class Ericka Engblom and Senior Airman Jessica Rogers
Dan L. McKinney: My name is Dan McKinney and I was a POW for 28 months in Korea and Chinese prison camp and I was fortunate enough to come back, kind of a special occasion today, 59 years ago today, I was released from a Chinese prison camp in the Korean war there was thirty-six-thousand-five-hundred-sixteen killed, ninety-thousand-one-hundred-thirty-four wounded, eighty-one-hundred seventy-six still missing, and there were seventy-two-hundred-forty-five P-O-W’s. and I was captured about twenty miles north of the thirty-eight parallel in a place that’s called the iron triangle. I walked into that camp on June the 19th, which was my sister’s birthday, sixty days that we walked over 600 miles, all of it at night. they started the brainwashing. I knew it wasn’t good and I told them it wasn’t good, those Chinese, and i argued with them and I told the kids I said don’t believe the brainwashing, you know what kind of country we’ve got at home. It’s been an honor to be here and talk to you and I hope you get something out of it to know how good a country you’ve got and what you have to do if it comes your time to protect it.
