    FORT McPHERSON, Ga. (July 29, 2010) - Gen. James D. Thurman, U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) commander, official affirmed Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G-6 William "Bill" T. Lasher into Senior Executive Service (SES) Thursday, during an appointment ceremony at FORSCOM headquarters. "I'm honored to get to this level. The Army is a team "sport," and there are a bunch of folks who helped me get to this level." Lasher said. "It's been a combination of skill, teamwork, and luck for me." In the Army, senior executives are the civilian counterparts of general officers. Some occupy the Army's top civilian management jobs, serving in position within the sustaining scientific and technical experts on whom the Army depends to achieve and sustain technical supremacy. These professionals are also the equivalent of Directors, Vice Presidents, and Chief Executive Officers (CEO's) of medium to large-scale companies in the private sector. Thurman said Lasher's recently obtained SES status arrives on the heels of more than 33 year of service to the U.S. Army, which will be instrumental to his success in his new position.

This was the scenario for the Soldiers from the 392nd Chemical Company, Arkansas Army National Guard based out of Little Rock, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency Urban Search and Rescue unit during Vibrant Response 10.2 field training exercise held at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center July 17. U.S. Army North's Joint Task Force - 51, headquartered in San Antonio, serves as the command and control element for the national emergency response FTX.

The FTX, which involves more than 2,700 service members and Department of Defense civilians from around the country, is a national domestic terrorism response exercise in which a simulated 10-kiloton nuclear weapon was detonated in Indianapolis. From the tactical operations center, task force members directed units through search and rescue, decontamination, mass casualty, medical evacuation, logistics convoy missions and emergency support missions in support of civil authorities.

    The J/G-8 sponsored a Resource Management Conference on July 29, 2010 at the Ft. Myer Officers' Club. Opening remarks were given to over 30 civilian and military participants by Col. Carlen Chestang, Jr., chief of staff, Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and The U. S. Army Military District of Washington. Chestang stated to attendees, "what you do on a daily basis is important to commanders. You serve as the stewards of the nation's resources."

    For some Soldiers, the hardest part of being deployed is not the extreme weather or long hours-it's being away from home, friends and family. Leaving behind a spouse for a year-long deployment can be one of the most challenging aspects for married couples. Time apart from a spouse can be emotionally challenging for both parties. In today's military, there are a growing number of dual military couples where both spouses serve, leading to unique challenges and hardships during deployments. With the Married Army Couples Program, which helps place married service members in proximal units, some couples have the advantage of deploying together. Within 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment and the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, there are several examples of this unique status. Three dual military couples within 'Dragoon' Troop either have spouses on the installation or deployed elsewhere.

Jarrett D. Brown of 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, received a Silver Star on Watkins Field at the beginning of a busy ceremony that included the brigade's redesignation and change of command.
