Retired Army Lt. Gen. Rienzi laid to rest at Punchbowl

HONOLULU - A man described as being one of the greatest Army communicators, retired Lt. Gen. Thomas M. Rienzi, 91, was laid to rest Dec. 30 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific after receiving full military honors. Rienzi died Dec. 15 at Tripler Army Medical Center. Rienzi was the former deputy director general, chief of staff, and chief engineer of NATO Integrated Communications Systems Management Agency (NICSMA) in Brussels, Belgium when he retired in 1979. "He was one of the greatest of the Great Generation," said Lt. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, commander of the U.S. Army Pacific, during his condolences to the family. "And frankly, I'm humbled to be able to honor him today. He loved Soldiers - those he commanded and those he taught, his cadets at West Point. He always took the time to develop those who served him and was deeply committed to them."

Arsenal Operation Family Timeout Program Continues Success

Operation Family Timeout, a program created and coordinated by the Rock Island Arsenal Army Community Service in 2005, continues to provide "free time" opportunities for the spouses of deployed military service members, as well as mobilized Department of Army civilians. Family members of deployed personnel from all branches of the military and mobilized civilian employees, whose children are ages six-weeks to 12-years-old, may use the program. Most importantly the program provides a support network for military family members who all share a common bond.

"ARRA stimulus money has provided $20 million to the Garrison, and has had an immediate impact on Arsenal Island and the local community," said Joel Himsl, Garrison Manager. "One excellent example is the construction of two senior officer quarters on RIA. The work is being done by local construction companies, which helps provide work to members of the community."

Annual Deer Hunts Sustain Herd at Blossom Point

Five Saturdays each fall, the Army's Blossom Point Research Facility in southern Maryland opens its gates to the public to help manage the white-tail deer population on the 1,600-acre range and to offer youth and adults the opportunity to hunt. Elsewhere, hundreds of Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Rhode Island responded to the snow emergency, rescuing stranded people as well as assisting in evacuations due to coastal flooding.
