WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud have written to the owners of Five Guys hamburger franchises in New England and urged them to use Maine potatoes to make French fries at the restaurant in Portland and a new location scheduled to open in Bangor.

In a letter to franchise owners Gene Prentice and Jamal Bourdoute, Snowe, Pingree and Michaud wrote:

"As you know, purchasing locally can significantly cut down on transportation costs as well as result in fresher food. Additionally, a growing number of consumers in Maine and around the country are keenly interested in supporting local farmers and appreciate having a connection to those growing their food."

Over her nearly four decade career in the U.S. Congress, Senator Snowe has been a tireless champion for Maine’s potato industry.

“Maine’s potato industry is simply iconic, and the crop our hardworking farmers produce each year is second to none,” Senator Snowe said. “As Five Guys presence in our state grows, I urge the company to buy their potatoes locally here in Maine – not only for their superior taste and quality, but to support our state’s economy.”

Michaud said Maine growers produce top quality potatoes.

"The potato industry is a critical part of Maine’s economy.  Using Maine potatoes at Five Guys locations in Portland and Bangor would provide new opportunities for Maine’s potato farmers and, of course, make great French fries," Michaud said.

This summer, Pingree successfully convinced cruise ship companies to buy Maine lobster when they visit Maine, and is hoping Five Guys will also agree to buy local.

"Buying locally not only guarantees fresh ingredients, but it's also good business because every dollar spent locally stays right here in the Maine economy," Pingree said.

Art in Embassies: Serving Abroad Through Their Eyes

U.S. Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies and U.S. Department of Defense Announce “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” Twelve “Best in Show” Awardees

In commemoration of Veterans Day, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies (AIE) and the U.S. Department of Defense proudly announce the 12 “Best in Show” featured in AIE’s 50th anniversary “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” photography exhibition.  A year ago on Veterans Day, Military, Civil Service and Foreign Service personnel were invited to submit photographs illustrating their life while serving abroad.  More than 3,200 images were submitted, from which 161 finalists were chosen; ultimately, the 12 “Best in Show” were identified.  These photographs, selected by a panel of distinguished photo-journalists, depict themes of friendship, places, faces, loss or triumph, providing a window on the complexity, diversity and courageous work performed by America’s heroes throughout the world.

The “Best in Show” images were juried by a panel that included two former Secretaries of State: Madeline Albright and Colin Powell; three former Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs: General Richard Myers, General Peter Pace and Admiral Mike Mullen; and NBC News’ David Gregory.

The “Best in Show” photographers are listed below:

Congratulations William and Kate!

Prince William and Kate Middleton are expecting a baby! ``Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby,'' the palace office said in a statement. It added Kate, who married William in April last year, was in hospital in London suffering from acute morning sickness and the pregnancy was in its early stages.

Congratulations! We look forward to the new arrival...as much... if not more than the royal wedding!

Costco Joe!

Vice President Joe Biden stopped by the grand opening of the Washington, D.C.. Costco store this morning! What did he buy? Children's books, fire logs, a 32-inch TV and an apple pie! He also met with Costco CEO Craig Jelinek and co-founder Jim Sinegal-- both who spoke at the Democratic National Convention this year.
What's our favorite part? That he stopped for the samples!

President Obama and Governor Romney will sit down over lunch for the first time since the election. The President will host his former political rival at the White House Thursday.

A senior Romney source tells Fox News that the Governor has no plans to attend a press conference/stakeout  and he will be coming in with no agenda.

Fox has also learned that Mitt Romney will meet with his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) tomorrow as well.

Welcome baby #Hashtag!

Parents come up with some creative names when it comes to their children--Apple, Facebook, Cougar, Moo, Graceland, and Wrigley just to name a few-- but this one may take the cake. Apparently, a couple has named their new baby girl Hashtag..as in a Twitter #Hashtag! And to top it off they announced her arrival on..FACEBOOK! Perhaps a Tweet would have been more appropriate?

We want to know what you think-- odd? Or a good choice? Do you have an interesting name? If so what was it like in school and growing up?

Oh, and we wish this family the best with their beautiful new baby girl! Congratulations!

What would you do with half a BILLION dollars??

The lottery 'Powerball' jackpot is at a record $500 million dollars! We want to know-- did you buy a ticket or even tickets?? What would you do with all of that money (an estimated $327 million after taxes) if you won?

So what are your odds? Here are some stats we have heard:
-You are 50 times more likely to die of a shark attack
-You are 100 times more likely to die of a flesh eating bacteria
-You are 17 times more likely to become President of the United States
-Your numerical odds are about 1 in 176 million or .000000057%

We can't lie-- some of us here at Fox DC and Special Report have purchased a few tickets. We will cross our fingers and wait for the results like the rest of you!

Good luck!
