Library Mission Statement
The United States Naval Academy is the Navy's undergraduate college. The Nimitz Library exists to support the mission of the Naval Academy by providing excellent library service on behalf of teaching, research, and other scholarly activity. To this end the Library staff work closely with the faculty to achieve the Library's goals, specified below.
Goals of the Nimitz Library
- Select, acquire, and make available the recorded information which is required to meet the academic needs of midshipmen and faculty.
- Provide the best possible bibliographic access to these materials, including appropriate use of the newest technologies.
- Provide the best possible reference service, including bibliographic instruction, to enable users to find the information they need.
- Provide the best possible physical access to needed information.
- Provide within the Library a suitable environment for research and study, and for the preservation of materials.
- Provide the best possible access to relevant information located elsewhere, and help deliver to our patrons electronic information from beyond the Library's walls.
- Maintain a collection of unique or rare materials with emphasis on the naval history of the United States, as well as the official archives of the Naval Academy.
- Provide for all Library staff a work environment which, within the context of mission orientation, encourages individual development, a thoughtful approach to problem-solving, clear and open communication, mutual respect, initiative, cooperation, and the development of expertise.
- Provide and develop the resources, both human and material, that will enable the Library to accomplish its goals and hence its mission.
