Remote Sensing
Tracer Bullet 05-1
In general, remote sensing is the process of acquiring and
recording
information about an object without coming into direct contact
with that object. In its earliest form remote sensing consisted
of a camera mounted on some kind of aerial platform (balloon,
kite, pigeon, etc.), from which a birds-eye view of a place could
be recorded. The first aerial photograph from an airplane was
taken in 1908 in a plane piloted by Wilbur Wright. Aerial reconnaissance
was used during both world wars for military purposes, speeding
the development of radar, infrared, electro-optical, and multispectral
systems. During the Cold War “spy satellites” were
used heavily on both sides, and although much of this imagery
has been declassified, remote sensing continues to play a key
role in the intelligence process for most technologically advanced
countries. Today, the declassification and broad commercialization
of systems allows private individuals to obtain high-resolution
images for personal use, and satellite imaging has become ubiquitous
within contemporary culture, most notably in film and television.
This guide focuses on the technologies used for observation
and data collection from a significant distance; satellite remote-sensing
and imaging of the earth and other celestial objects. Major fields
within which remotely sensed data are most frequently used include
agriculture, archaeology, astronomy, climatology, engineering,
environmental science, forestry, geology, hydrology, meteorology,
oceanography, and soil science. Also inextricably linked with
remote sensing are the disciplines of cartography, geographic
information systems (GIS), surveying, and geodesy. Remote sensing
is used in surveillance of human activities for everyday security
purposes, as well as in biology and medicine. Some resources
on these related topics are included.
This guide supersedes TB 75-2 in providing a review of the
literature on remote sensing in the collections of the Library
of Congress.
Not intended as a comprehensive bibliography, it is designed--as
the name Tracer Bullet implies--to put the reader "on
target."

Film cassettes and microfiche indexes of images of the Earth taken from satellites
and aircraft, 1960s–1990s.
The Library’s collection in the Prints
and Photographs Division includes
aerial images of significant historical value, however they tend to be miscellaneous
in nature and are not indexed for easy retrieval. The basic reference aid
to locate aerial photographs is the P&P Card Catalog.
Aerial photographs in the P&P collection are listed mainly under the
subject heading “aerial photographs” but can also be found under
related headings, such as “bombing, aerial,” etc. The P&P
Online Catalog (PPOC-http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html) has a few of
these collections cataloged as well as many individual images. The subject
headings list can be browsed online. Digitized online collections include
the 4,200 images in the Panoramic
Photographs (http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/coll/187_pans.html)
collection.
Many of the P&P images are land views, primarily of the United States,
and include prominent landmarks and features such as rivers, dams, reservoirs,
etc. There are also images of airfields (commercial and military), shorelines,
military actions (including ground, naval and air combat) and intelligence,
industrial areas, cities, railroads, and natural disasters (hurricanes,
floods, etc.).
Selected aerial photograph collections:
-
