October 30 Reception to Launch Fischer Autobiography

Please join us for a reception to launch Vic Fischer’s new autobiography, To Russia With Love: An Alaskan’s Journey, on October 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. in UAA’s Consortium Library, room 307. There will be free parking in the library parking lot and the east parking garage.

The book, written with Charles Wohlforth, traces Fischer’s life from his early days in Germany and Russia to his decades in Alaska, where he was a delegate to the Alaska Constitutional Convention, a member of both the territorial and state senates, and the first director of ISER. Today he is a director emeritus at ISER and continues to study state and local government policy and Alaska-Russia issues.

The book was published by University of Alaska Press.
The event is sponsored by the UAA, ISER, and UA Press.

Kids Count Alaska 2011-2012 Data Book Now Available

A new Kids Count Alaska Data Book, providing a broad picture of the well-being of Alaska’s children, is now available in print and online. The book is an annual publication that brings together information from many sources on the health, safety, education, and economic status of Alaska children statewide and by region. It also compares how children in Alaska and across the country are doing. The book is sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which supports similar programs in all 50 states. It was prepared by Virgene Hanna, project director, and other researchers at ISER. This year’s data book celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the United States, featuring photos of Girl Scouts of Alaska in many activities the organization sponsors.

ISER Director Named CITI Fellow

Columbia University’s Institute of Tele-Information (CITI) has appointed ISER’s director, Heather Hudson, as one of about 20 Inaugural CITI Fellows.

This is a new program, recognizing people noted in the field. The fellows include government and corporate decision makers as well as academic researchers and nonprofit leaders. They will participate in monthly online seminars and other activities that present new information, raise impending issues, and promote discussion. The Columbia Institute for Tele-Information is a research center focusing on strategy, management, and policy issues in communications, media, and the Internet. CITI was established in 1983 as the first such center worldwide at a major school of management.

Lunchtime Talk: Building Gateways to Alleviate Poverty

David K. Shipler is a best-selling author, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and former foreign correspondent for the The New York Times. Please join us at ISER to hear Mr. Shipler talk about alleviating poverty by recognizing and dealing with the multiple interacting problems families have. His book, The Working Poor: Invisible in America, was a finalist for the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award. He won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction for Arab and Jew: Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land. In the 1970s and 1980s he was a correspondent for The New York Times in Saigon, Moscow, and Jerusalem.

Student Researcher Needed for Valuation of Ecosystem Services

Researchers at ISER are collaborating with Earth Economics, a non-profit organization, on economic valuation of ecosystem services in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough. The interdisciplinary team of researchers is looking for a graduate or undergraduate student researcher to assist in survey design, data collection, and literature review. Candidates must live in Southcentral Alaska, be familiar with the Mat-Su Borough, and be seeking a graduate or undergraduate degree in economics, public policy, environmental science, geography or a related field. Ideal candidates will have deep local knowledge of the area and an aptitude for inter-disciplinary research. Apply here.

The George Rogers Emerging Scholars Fund

The George Rogers Emerging Scholars Fund was established at ISER in 2011 to encourage young scholars and promote research opportunities in Alaska. It honors the memory of George Rogers, an economist and guiding light of ISER for half a century.

Alaska Native Language Map A digital edition of the map, Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska, is now available. It is a joint project of the Alaska Native Language Center and ISER, based on ground-breaking Alaska Native language maps created by Michael E. Krauss in 1974 and 1982. Printed copies are available from ANLC.

An interactive version is also available on ISER's Alaskool website.
