Housing for Families

The Commander Navy Installations Command (CNIC) housing program (N93) is responsible for ensuring safe, suitable and affordable housing for all military personnel and their dependents assigned for duty at or in the vicinity of Navy installations. The Navy family housing program achieves this objective through several means:

Navy Owned Family Housing
Today the government-owned housing program is predominantly at foreign locations with a few isolated locations in the continental U.S. Current inventory includes about 10,000 units.

The CNIC N93 Housing program is responsible for budgeting and executing all of the resources and programs required for owned family housing. Costs include the provision of maintenance, recapitalization, services, management, and utility funding.

Government owned family housing locations and approximate inventory:

  • Marianas: Guam (3100 homes)
  • Japan: Atsugi, Yokosuka, Sasebo (4500 homes)
  • Italy, Spain: Naples, Sigonella, Rota (800 homes)
  • Korea: Chinhae (50 homes)
  • Mid-Atlantic: Wallops Island, Willow Grove (300 homes)
  • Northwest: Kitsap WA (Bangor) (870 homes)
  • Southeast: Athens GA, Guantanamo Bay, Kingsville TX, New Orleans LA (750 homes)
  • Southwest: Ventura CA (225 homes)

Navy Leased Family Housing:
The Navy leases family housing in locations where it is not economical or practical for the Navy to own inventory, typically in foreign countries. However the Navy does have some residual domestic leases in the U.S. at several locations. The family housing program oversees the execution of the leases and budgets for the related expenses.

The total Navy leased inventory worldwide is about 4,000 homes with approximately 2,500 in foreign countries. The remaining 1,500 are domestic leases set to expire by 2015.

Navy Privatized Housing:
The Navy has privatized family housing at most U.S. locations.

Housing Services for Families:
Installation Housing Service Centers have staff trained to help customers locate housing in the community near Navy installations.
