10/17/2012 - Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland, Texas -- International Infection Prevention Week is underway to recognize the importance of infection prevention around the world. At Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, the Infection Control staff has several activities planned throughout the week to educate healthcare workers and patients about prevention and reducing infection.

The awareness campaign here kicked off Monday with an opening ceremony held in the WHASC atrium.

"When you think about history, health and its foundation and changes in our entire society, it's all driven by the understanding of infection control," said Col. James McClain, 59th Medical Wing vice commander. "Whether it's a nosocomial environment, out in a home or public area, it is critical."

Other events planned for the week include a "Wheels of Prevention" cart traveling throughout the WHASC with the opportunity to win prizes. A special potluck luncheon will take place Oct. 18 in honor of the infection control staff. On Friday, Oct. 19, there will be a contest for the best area with an Infection Control theme.

"Our desire is to provide a focal point for infection preventionists, healthcare professionals and consumers to shine a light on infection prevention and its power to save lives," said Leola Taylor, 59th MDW Infection Control surveillance technician.
