High schools come back into play

That April-long break in the high school spring sports seasons comes to an end Friday, with soccer games at Patch and Ramstein and baseball and softball games at Hohenfels, Aviano and Vicenza. A full slate of baseball, softball, soccer and track is scheduled for Saturday. If you have no plans for those days, I’d recommend taking in a game near you – if nothing else, you can’t beat the admission price. High school sports remain Europe’s best spectator entertainment value.

In soccer, inter-regional match-ups are scheduled Friday when the International School of Brussels boys and girls travel to Ramstein and the Black Forest Academy squads invade Patch. In softball and baseball, Friday’s doubleheaders send Heidelberg to Hohenfels, Sigonella to Aviano and Naples to Vicenza.

Saturday’s soccer slate has ISB at Kaiserslautern, AFNORTH at Bitburg and Wiesbaden at Schweinfurt for non-regional games. In Region I, it’s Lakenheath at Menwith Hill and Brussels at SHAPE; Region II sends BFA to Ramstein on Saturday. In Region III, Saturday’s match-ups are Hohenfels at Heidelberg, Bamberg’s boys at Patch and Ansbach at Vilseck, and in Italy, Saturday’s pairings are Naples at Aviano, Marymount at Vicenza, American Overseas School of Rome at American School of Milan and the International School of Florence boys at Sigonella.

Friday’s baseball and softball schedule sends Heidelberg to Hohenfels, Sigonella to Aviano and Naples to Vicenza for regional baseball and softball doubleheaders. In Western Region play Saturday, it’s AFNORTH at Lakenheath, Alconbury at Kaiserslautern and Bitburg at Baumholder. In the Eastern Region, Ansbach travels to Schweinfurt, Patch goes to Wiesbaden and Vilseck inviades Hohenfels for doubleheaders in both diamond sports. Heidelberg’s softball team is to journey to Bamberg on Saturday. In the Southern Region on Saturday, Naples is to play in Aviano and Sigonella in Vicenza.

Saturday on the track, where Europe’s runners, jumpers and throwers will be in action for just the second time this season, multi-school meets are scheduled for Ansbach, Baumholder, Hohenfels, Lakenheath and Naples.

Check them out. I think you'll be impressed.
