 VA Guarantees 20 Millionth Home Loan - Today the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it has guaranteed 20 million home loans since its home loan program was established in 1944 as part of the original GI Bill of Rights for returning World War II Veterans. The 20 millionth loan was guaranteed for a home in Woodbridge, Va., purchased by the surviving spouse of an Iraq War Veteran who passed away in 2010.  (10/26/12)

Longtime VA Researcher Receives Lasker-DeBakey Award - Dr. Thomas E. Starzl, a long-time VA researcher often called “the father of human transplantation,” has received one of the world’s top awards for science from the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation. (10/11/12)

Nineteen VA Medical Facilities Named to Joint Commission’s Top Performers List - Nineteen Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities from across the Nation were recently recognized by The Joint Commission as top performers on key health care quality measures for 2011/2012.  (10/11/12)

VA Offers a New Tool to Help Veterans Prevent Diabetes - The Department of Veterans Affairs today announced the implementation of a pilot version of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a program being promoted nationally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aimed at reducing the number of Veterans who develop diabetes. (10/5/12)

VA Leads Nation in Breast Cancer Screening Rates - The Department of Veterans Affairs leads the Nation in breast cancer screening rates and has outperformed non-VA health care systems in breast cancer screenings for more than 15 years, with 87 percent of eligible women receiving mammograms in the VA health care system in fiscal year 2010. (10/1/12)

VA Awards over $47 Million for State and Tribal Veterans Cemeteries - The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the award of 18 grants totaling $47,462,135 to 15 states and one tribal government to establish new Veterans cemeteries and to expand or improve others. (10/1/12)

Online Toolkit Aims to Support Mental Health Providers Serving Veterans in the Community - The Department of Veterans Affairs has developed a new online Community Provider Toolkit (www.mentalhealth.va.gov/communityproviders) aimed at delivering support, therapeutic tools, and resources to community providers treating Veterans for mental health concerns. (9/27/12)
