Don’t Forget Your 1098-E Tax Form When Filing Your Taxes

If you made payments on your federal student loans during 2011, you may be eligible to deduct a portion of the interest you paid on your federal tax return.  Student loan interest payments are reported on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1098-E, Student Loan Interest Statement (commonly called the 1098-E).

Your student loan servicer (the entity you make payments to) will provide you a copy of your 1098-E.  Your servicer may send you your 1098-E via U.S. Postal Service or electronically.  Check with your servicer if you haven’t yet received your 1098-E for 2011.  If you had multiple loan servicers in 2011, you will receive a separate 1098-E from each servicer.

If you’re not sure who your loan servicer is, you can look it up on www.nslds.ed.gov or call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243; TTY 1-800-730-8913). To see a list of Federal Student Aid servicers for the Direct Loan Program and for FFEL Program Loans purchased by the U.S. Department of Education, go to our Loan Servicer page.

finding how to get a 1098e from the government is AWFUL. i have jumped through so many hoops and am so frustrated….

  2. don says:

We got switched to MOHELA in December. Now can’t get tax info from them OR previous servicer!

    • jc says:

I’ve got the same problem…I’ve always been able to get to all the information I need, but sine being switched to mohela I can’t access interest paid, nor apply for a deferment. Help! I’m trying to complete my taxes for the 2012-13 FAFSA, and the deadline is coming right up!

      • Ed says:

I thought it was just me, but I guess we are all in the same boat. Ever since I got switched to Mohela, I’ve had nothing but trouble. I’ve been waiting for my 1098 since January, 2012. I even called the U.S. Department of Education in early February and they promised me I was going to get my 1098 within 5-10 days, but I never got it. So, I’m going to have to call them again. This is the only thing holding up my taxes; I’m very frustrated!!!

  3. sonnie says:

I’ve never felt so helpless…my refund was seize 6000.09.I’ve been out of job for the past two-months. And have single mother of four kids. I do not have any other income. I just to know if there’s anything I can do about this.

    • Beatrice says:

Contact American Student Assistance (they would have sent you a letter telling you that they were seizing your refund on behalf of the current loan holder). You have to fill out some forms but can have your full return refunded to you based on your current financial situation. I had mine returned last year.

  4. Danny says:

All, like James mentioned on 2/8/12, go to:

    https://www.myedaccount.com/accounts/login.aspx

Go through the login process (or start new account) and you can print your 1098-E out.. Just got mine..

    • Sabrina says:

I had to create a new account but it finally worked!! I was also getting irritated with the whole process but happy to have gotten my form for the year.

    • Melanie says:

THANKS SO MUCH @ Danny! I was getting worried b/c I couldn’t find my info, saw your post, and got what I needed. I appreciate it!

    • Vanessa says:

Thank you so much Danny! You made this process so quick and easy for me. I hope eveybody scrolls down to read this instead of going around in circles.

    • Patricia says:

Thanks Danny. I was trying my best to locate this info online. I so glad I strolled down to find your post. Appreciation is granted.

  5. Kat says:

You can print your tax from by going to your account information.

    • Kat says:

      sorry, FORM, not from.

    • Craig says:

Where do we go to enter our account information at? I have looked and searched and I have no idea where to go to get it.

    • Dan says:

DIRECT LOAN SERVICING IS PROVIDING STUDENT WITH THE WRONG AMOUNT ON THEIR 1098-e’s

My wife and I encountered a problem with the 1098-e interest paid box as reported by Direct Loan Servicing. She graduated in May 2011, and we made our first payment on 11/30/2011. In November, just before we made our first payment, several thousand dollars of interest was capitalized into the principal balance. The payment we made on 11/30 (over $2,000) was less than the capitalized interest on Group A, to which the payment was allocated. So I was surprised to see $90.63 of interest on my wife’s 1098-e even though I thought we would be credited with an amount over $2,000. I did some research, and Direct Loan Servicing is required to report student loan interest that includes capitalized interest. Unfortunately, they are improperly excluding capitalized interest that can be deducted. See the IRS letter on the subject here:

      http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs‐regs/td9125.pdf

If I hadn’t caught the error, we would end up paying a few hundred dollars in taxes more than we should. And payments that should be applied to capitalized interest in 2012 will also be reported wrong on our 2012 form 1098-e.

All former students should check their interest paid on their 1098-e to make sure it includes capitalized interest. Reporting a number on your 1040 that is different than the 1098-e might delay the processing of your tax return, but it is the correct way to do things and worth the hassle.

I called DLS to inform them of the issue, and they offered to send me a copy of their program policies. I asked for a supervisor and told them their policy on capitalized interest is wrong, but didn’t get anywhere.

If I knew who to call I would report them! They are causing students who don’t know much about taxes to pay more than they should. It’s just deceptive and wrong.

  6. James says:

I have yet to receive my paperwork just like most of you. I paid my loan off on Feb 3 so I wont be getting anymore statements either. I also have not received my wifes either and her loan is the the Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program. When I call I get sent to a voicemail box where noone ever returns your call.

    • Lydia says:

When I called I was disconnected, didn’t have the opportunity to leave a message, sent an email asking how I could get a record of intrest paid two weeks ago with no reply. Should have got the statement by now or be able to view my account on-line!

  7. Jill says:

I have yet to receive mine either, or any statements for that matter, so don’t even have the YTD total to go by. Their “system” has been down since November, and last I spoke with someone about my loan payments, they have again backed up the date to “maybe the end of March”.. How is this ok? What happened to the law that states that all of the tax info is supposed to be out by 1/31?? Are government entities exempt from this? Would love to know what is going on!

  8. Joseph says:

After paying on my load for 12 years I have never had to call in asking for my form 1098. I am meeting my tax prep person next week and can’t complete the filing with out this. Why the hold up this time?

And how do I get my 1098 on-line?

  9. Rita says:

I’m filing using the 1040 tax form. Where do I record my 1098e information?

    • Dan says:

Line 33 on page 1 of the 1040. If you have deductible student loan interest you should use form 1040 instead of the 1040EZ.

  10. Russ says:

I was wondering what was going on. I have not gotten mine yet either. Is it not the law that says we are supposed to have these by january 31 of each year? I need to get my taxes filed. Who is the one person we need to talk to.

    • chadwick green says:

i have yet to receive my 1098 E for 2012, and am quite disgusted. like everyone else here, i too need it to complete my 2012 taxes. i have had no luck with calls and no way to look it up on the internet to even try to re-print. the government should send us emails to know when to expect these forms or at least a phone call or regular mail with their apologies. i have direct loans, but still no luck, even owned by the federal government.

  11. Cathy says:

I’m thinking of calling the IRS. I would like to know how they are able to get away with breaking IRS laws which state they should have been to the borrower by 1/31. All I get is the runaround. Twice was told to call back in a week because the system was down. The third time I was given the vague answer of “they will be mailed shortly.” Like when? 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months? If Johnny Taxpayer who ran a business didn’t have his stuff out on time, he’d be exhorbitantly fined! No wonder the country is a mess!

    • Bert says:

For what it’s worth I e-mailed my reps in both houses of Congress.

    • Bert says:

      Alert!

I received my billing statement for Feb. today. The envelope said “Tax Documents Enclosed.” All I had was my billing statement. Until I looked more closely. Smack in the middle and just below your loan info is a small box that is your 1098e Form. I would have missed it had I not looked closely.

      • wes says:

thanks Bert you saved me a lot of headaches.

      • Mo says:

OMG BERT!!!!!! SORRY I’M SHOUTING, BUT THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I found the little box in the middle of the Feb statement, just like you said. Unbelievable. Dept of Ed hates us.

    • Stacey says:

I am in the same boat – not only have I not received statements for the past few months I still do not have my 1098-e so I cannot file my taxes! Any help would be appreciated. Fixing to send a letter to the Washington DC address because this is a joke.

      • Jeff says:

Same here.No 1098 to file taxes + my original loan was with the US Dept of Education…i sent my december payment but it has not been applied…supposedly forwarded to Mohela….Mohelas 1st statement said i owed double the amount of my payment????like wth is going on????

        • Alla says:

Jeff, I have the same problem – Mohela doubled my monthly payment. Multiple calls and conversations with them didn’t resolve this issue for. Were you able to solve your problem?

  12. Nicole says:

I attended a foreign university last year, is there any way of retrieving or compiling a 1098-t for this?

  13. Dan says:

I am dealing directly with the US Dept of Ed and they are telling me that they have been updating their system. That’s why they haven’t mailed me any statements for tha last 5 months, nor can I get my 1098E. I keep mailing my payments or paying over the phone, but I sure hope they get it together. No wonder they say there are record defaults in student loans. US Dept of Ed is totally screwed up!

  14. Thieu says:

Which site do I go to in order to down load Form 1098-E.

  15. liz says:

I really need my tax form….why haven’t I gotten yet!? My husband and I need to get our tax return ASAP! ….frustrated in Seattle!

  16. Cathrina Palomo says:

I just received my 1098-T form 2011 and now I can be able to file my taxes this year.

    • Kirk says:

Cathrina – you said 1098-T, I suspect you mean… (IRS) Form 1098-E, Student Loan Interest Statement (commonly called the 1098-E)? This could be good news!!! We’re still awaiting ours!

  17. James says:

i don’t know if people are still having problems, but i was able to go here and login and the form was there: https://www.myedaccount.com/accounts/login.aspx

  18. tee says:

you should be able to go to your loan servicer’s site i.e. Direct Loans , log in or create an account, there should be an Alert Meassage that reads “Your 2011 student loan interest paid information for your taxes is now available”. CLick view/print and you can print it from there

  19. ahenibah says:

I called my collection agency who says dept of ed have til 2/29 to mail out 1098e forms.

  23. George says:

WE have not yet recieved our 1098 yet. My wife has never had a “pin number” let alone know who her” loan server” is. Alm of my phone calls get no results.

  24. Steve says:

After several phone calls about receiving a 1098 this year, I was informed that the Dept of Education applied for and received an extension from the IRS that allows them to wait until Feb. 29th, 2012 to mail the 1098′s this year. Wonderful…

  25. FedUp says:

My loans were sold to acs-education by Dept. of Ed. last year after 5 years of great service with Wells Fargo. ACS is a nightmare, the interest rate taken from my payment varies from month-to-month depending on what day they post my payment (even though it’s supposed to be fixed). They refuse to mail me a 1098 form because I paid less than $600 in interest last year. But if I want to use my Social Security number on their website (company is based in India), they’ll email me one. Or I can get it verbally over the phone. Thanks Department of Ed!

  26. Aimee says:

To everyone trying to get a 1098-e:

Go to nslds.ed.gov and log in to get your loan info. You’ll need your Pin and other info. Then look at each loan and see who the servicing agency is (click on the number at the beginning of each line). Call or go to the website of that agency, and you should be able to request a copy of your 1098-e.

    Good luck!

  27. Doug says:

  30. Mary says:

My grandsons received Pell Grants. Do their parents Ned to add that grant money as income on their tax returns? The boys live at home, but use their housing allowance for room and board.

  31. Bert says:

Glad I read the comments because I have not received mine yet either. How do they get away with it? They do unless we complain to the right source. Shame on them!

  32. Jay says:

Never got mine either. Probably going to have to call tomorrow when they’re open.

  37. Cathy says:

I just called the Dept. of Ed. and they have no idea when the 1098-E will be sent even though per the IRS site they should have been to the borrower by 1/31. How do they get away with this?

i need a 1098 form for my taxes

  44. donna melendez says:

I need to get a copy of interset paid on my sons students loans i have been paying for 2011

  45. Gregg says:

I have a question…..if my federal refund was seized by the dept of education, will I still receive a tax form….I didn’t know if I could still claim the interest since it is in default, and it is in default because they want me to pay about $375 a month…and will budge on the amount…. but they did get about $4,000 which was mostly interest.

    • Justin says:

That’s my question as well. Even though I was in deferment, which means not only was it illegal for the to seize my refund, but also illegal for them to charge me interest. That’s okay, they can do whatever they want I guess.

      • Judy says:

You should still receive a 1098-e.

        • Jessica says:

the tax law says you can claim any interest up to $2500 that you were required to pay on your student loan. this means if they took your refund as an offset, you need a 1098E to see how much of it was used to pay interest and can claim that. BTW I called on Monday 2/6 and talked to a supervisor who said they had no idea when they would be correct and sent out and to call back in 7-14 days. makes me want to withhold my payments till I get it!!!

    • JEN says:

You should still get a tax form. My student loan went into default & they have me wage attached & I still get one. They took a $20000 loan & added a penalty onto it & now owe over $50000, still can’t see how they can do that!
