FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MIAMI  -- U.S. Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, commander of U.S. Southern Command, will present the Outstanding Civilian Service Award to City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez during a formal ceremony 2:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the command’s Conference Center of the Americas in Doral.

Fraser will recognize Bermudez with the Department of the Army award for his enduring support to SOUTHCOM, U.S. military members and their families.

The Secretary of the Army established the Outstanding Civilian Service Award in 1959 to commend private citizens whose outstanding service resulted in substantial or significant contributions to a command.

While serving on the Beacon Council's Miami Dade Defense Alliance, Bermudez worked with local, state and federal leaders during the latest round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) considerations to keep SOUTHCOM in Doral.

During the construction of SOUTHCOM’s new headquarters, Bermudez worked closely with his city’s building and planning departments to ensure municipal construction coordination efforts were smooth and efficient.

As mayor of Doral, he worked with the city’s council to create a Military Affairs Advisory Board as a forum to assist members of the U.S. armed forces and military veterans who live and work in the city.

Bermudez’ leadership as mayor was also instrumental in the construction and opening of a 1.2 acre Veterans’ Park with a memorial honoring the service of current and past military members and in the establishment of a 5-kilometer Freedom Run that benefits military families.

The Doral Mayor is the second South Florida community leader to be recognized with the award. Fraser also presented the award to Miami-Dade District 12 Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz during a similar ceremony Oct. 11.
