World Digital Library
The World Digital Library will make available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual format, significant primary materials from cultures around the world, including manuscripts, maps, rare books, musical scores, recordings, films, prints, photographs, architectural drawings, and other significant cultural materials. The objectives of the World Digital Library are to promote international and intercultural understanding and awareness; provide a resource for educators, students, and scholars; expand cultural content on the Internet; and narrow the global digital divide by building capacity in developing countries.
Partners are libraries, archives, and other cultural institutions that contribute content - digital versions of important materials in their collections - to the WDL.
The Library seeks support from the private sector to help develop the WDL interface and technology, create interfaces for each language, and establish new digital conversion production centers (or sustain the operation of existing centers) at partner institutions around the world.
