Historian, author and scientist Harry Lang presents a multimedia program, "Lincoln's Role in Deaf Culture and History," in a program co-sponsored by the Library's Center for the Book, the National Literary Society for the Deaf and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Committee. - March 14, 2008 8:30 AM - 5:45 PM - The New Deal at 75, Mumford 6th floor James Madison building. "The New Deal Legacy and Cotemporary Scholarship" features leading scholars from throughout the United States and Library experts highlighting new research and recent discoveries inspired by the Library's collections of documentary materials generated by the cultural programs of the New Deal. - August 21 - September 2 – James Madison Council Great Libraries of the World Tour: Baltic Cruise and Tour of Great Libraries of Scandinavia and St. Petersburg.
- September 8, 6:00 PM – America’s Promise Education Summit. Civic and corporate leaders from twelve cities across the United States gather to learn firsthand about the Library’s unmatched K-12 education resources for teachers, students, and families, and how they can best be utilized in their schools. Includes reception.
- September 10, 5:00 PM – Herman Wouk Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing of Fiction. The Library honors literary legend, Herman Wouk, and bestows upon on him the first Library of Congress Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing of Fiction. The evening will feature tributes from noted authors and acclaimed musician/author Jimmy Buffet, to be followed by a private dinner in the Members Room.
- September 26, 6:00 PM - National Book Festival Gala. First Lady Laura Bush hosts this black-tie gala in celebration of the eighth annual National Book Festival. The Library will honor the First Lady for her unflagging commitment to literacy and reading.

The 2008 National Book Festival celebrates literacy and reading -- featuring nearly 70 best-selling authors and illustrators on the National Mall. Have an opportunity to mingle with your favorite authors and have your books signed, with special seating in our pavilions. - December 10 - John W. Kluge Prize in Human Sciences. Featuring a black-tie gala celebrating the awarding of the fourth Kluge Prize.
- December 10-11 – James Madison Council Fall Meeting. Featuring a special viewing of the Library’s unparalleled presidential collections with our expert curators and an opportunity to be the first to utilize personalized “passports to knowledge” to access our new exhibitions, stroll through the new passageway connecting the Library to the Capitol, and participate in a business meeting key to charting the Library’s future course.

- May 23, 8:00 PM - Concert Gala. The Library of Congress Celebrates Paul Simon’s musical achievements with an all-star gala Concert at the Warner Theatre. Paul Simon, one of America’s most respected songwriters and musicians, will be the recipient of the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
