Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights María Otero

Amman--  Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights María Otero arrived on a three-day visit to Jordan today to meet with senior Jordanian officials, representatives from international organizations, youth groups, human rights activists, trafficking victims, and law enforcement officials.

Under Secretary Otero will also travel to refugee areas along the Jordanian border and speak with individuals who have fled the violence in Syria.

Under Secretary Otero was sworn in as Under Secretary of State on August 10, 2009. As the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights at the U.S. Department of State, Otero oversees and coordinates U.S. foreign relations in matters of civilian security, including democracy, human rights, population, refugees, trafficking in persons, rule of law, counter-narcotics, crisis prevention and countering violent extremism.
