Social Security

General Information

Contact Information:

The U.S. Embassy in Amman cannot accept claims, so if you have questions about your benefits we advise you to contact the Social Security Administration Regional Office in Jerusalem at FBU.Jerusalem@ssa.gov

A great deal of other useful information is available on the Social Security Administration website.

Social Security Benefits:

If you apply for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits on or after May 1, 2011, you must receive your payments electronically.  If you did not sign up for electronic payments when you applied for benefits, we strongly urge you to do it now.  You must switch to electronic payments by March 1, 2013.  If you don't, you may experience an interruption in payment. More information is available on the Social Security website.

In Jordan, direct deposit service is available to account holders with the Bank of Jordan and the Cairo-Amman Bank. Please visit the main branch of either bank to inquire about direct deposit.

How to Apply for a Social Security Number:

After you have completed your application, the Embassy can assist with the submission of the form and the supporting documentation.  The Embassy does not retain copies of SSN applications or issued SSNs.  It can take up to eight (8) months from the date of application for receipt of an SSN and card to be issued to the applicant.
