    The cadets from the Civil Air Patrol Central Louisiana Composite Squadron visited Gorgas Army Airfield to view the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, "Task Force Wings," helicopters Oct. 16 during its field exercise at the Joint Readiness Training Center near Fort Polk, La. Their ages ranged from 12-21 years old; they were excited to see the different types of aircraft TF Wings utilized and learn about them, but there was one highly-anticipated helicopter -- the AH64 Apache attack helicopter.

    It is Friday morning, Oct. 19, and while most Soldiers don their uniform and go to work, Soldiers of the 7th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, roll up their sleeves and head out the front gate. Organization Day this month for the "Dragons," Company D, 7th Bn, 101st Avn. Reg., consisted of 92 volunteers assisting with eight different community outreach projects spread throughout the Clarksville area in order to show their support for the surrounding community. "(There's) something to be said about going out, getting away from work but also doing some good," said Capt. Ben Summers, the Dragons' company commander.

The last of the awardees found their seats as approximately 100 friends and family members, Soldiers and leaders found theirs. The gathering in McAuliffe Hall Atrium, Oct. 18, recognized the Fort Campbell, Ky., Volunteer of the Month, where 159th Combat Aviation Brigade had three recipients. The Volunteer of the Month program is dedicated by the post to recognize all the volunteers for Fort Campbell, explained Sonya Long, the family readiness support advisor for the 159th CAB. Each brigade has two months during the year to nominate their volunteers, and the top three with the most hours or an exceptional community outreach get awarded a certificate, division pin, post parking pass and a bag with other goodies. Col. Jimmy Blackmon, the brigade commander for 159th CAB, said in a society that is increasingly self-focused, it is important to recognize people whose attention is on others.

The reasons friends, families and neighbors participated in the three-mile March for Cancer at the Oak Grove War Memorial Walking Trail Oct. 20 varied from person to person, but to each individual participating, cancer was just that -- personal. Essie Saulman and Sandra Calo, Family Readiness Group leaders for Company D, 3rd Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, put the event together to raise money for cancer charities and to honor women who have had great influence on their lives.

    A plastic bag floats mid-air down Interstate 49, near Fort Polk, La., where Soldiers with 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, "Task Force Wings," are conducting exercises at the Joint Readiness Training Center. The bag hits a windshield and gently rolls off the vehicle with no harm done. For an aircraft, however, small or lightweight items kicked up into the air can have potentially cataclysmic results. Rotary blades can become a high-powered slingshot for hard objects, such as a bolt, or become entangled with flexible items, like a plastic bag or string. "Foreign object damage is a constant hazard to Army aircrew members and one that can increase the likelihood of accidents, possibly resulting in aircraft damage, injuries and fatalities," said Chris Tumble, a safety specialist from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness and Safety Center in Fort Rucker, Ala.

But an often forgotten group of Soldiers who help to keep the morale up, put a smile on your face when you finally get to see them, and keep your body nourished are the food service specialist -- the stomach of the operations. Meals ready-to-eat, better known as MREs, are what many Soldiers are used to when in the field, but the leadership of the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, "Task Force Wings," know it takes more than that to keep the mission going. "If you take care of your Soldiers, they will take care of you," said Chaplain (Capt.) Tim Raburn, the chaplain for TF Wings.

Soldiers made a high-speed sprint to the closest place for adequate cover; when the "All Clear" sounded, all first responders and all participating parties helped to get the wounded personnel to immediate care.

    Pilots with companies B and C, 3rd Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, will be spending three weeks in October sharpening their skills here at Fort Campbell, Ky. To qualify annually, the pilots must be able to prove their proficiency in certain tasks, from tight turns and rolls to hitting targets accurately. The AH-64 Apache helicopter aerial gunnery tables consist of day and night time firing. The purpose is to engage and destroy enemy targets efficiently in combat.

Yurus, the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade's chaplain. The Department of the Army has designated September as Army Suicide Prevention Month, and on Sept. 27, the Army will conduct a suicide prevention day to focus on promoting good health, teammate involvement, risk reduction and resiliency.

    During 2012, the medically non-deployable population at Fort Campbell, Ky., has increased to approximately 20 percent of the Division's overall assigned strength, according to medical profile data reported by Blanchfield Army Community Hospital and the Integrated Disability Evaluation System. To enhance the readiness posture of the brigades, all units must continue to reduce the medically non-deployable population by half, no later than the end of 2013. In an effort to streamline the process and make as many Soldiers as battle-ready as possible, unit commanders will assist with reviews and revisions of policies, processes and training requirements that have caused the medical non-deployable rate to rise.

Resiliency training for Soldiers is just as essential as any other military training. Discussing theories is important, but working the techniques into practical, every day activities is where the rubber meets the road. "Soldier resiliency is a Soldier's ability to bounce back from adverse situations much wiser, stronger, and better equipped," said Capt. Vincent L. Hardy, the chaplain for 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment. "Each experience shows a person a new facet about themselves and it brings out new coping mechanisms. The bottom line is that the information, if utilized, can help a person or family unit bounce back from adversity wiser and stronger." Resiliency training is just one part of the Army's holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to suicide prevention.

    The four aircraft formed a perfect line, then parted ways and danced delicately into individual parking places Saturday at Fort Campbell, Ky. The trip was over, and the Medevac crews were ready to begin what was left of their 4-day weekend. Within only hours of notification, eight crews of Eagle Dustoff (Company C, 7th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade) traveled to Fort Rucker, Ala., Thursday. They were staged for potential search-and-rescue missions, ready to assist at a moment's notice. With the National Guard and the other government agencies in place, the Medevac crews were not needed and returned home. Response time can mean the difference between life and death, and the Army excels at rehearsing for all kinds of emergencies.

  • Crew chiefs learn to train future generations through MTT

    For nearly five weeks, 10 crew chiefs with 4th and 7th battalions, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, have been studying standards and immersed in instruction as they take the Aircraft Crewmember Standard Instruction course. The objective of the course is to qualify the crewmembers to be flight instructors, meaning they will have all the tools they need to be a certified flight instructor. Soon, the crew chiefs who graduate from the course will be able to train and evaluate future crew chiefs. This means they will be even more proficient in tasks such as aircraft systems, malfunction analysis, aviation medicine and other aviation safety subjects.

    Soldiers of the Task Force Wings (4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade) spent four days, Aug. 21-24, rehearsing their quick-response deployment readiness capabilities. The brigade exercised all facets of preparing an aviation task force, including its supporting elements, to deploy on short or no notice, from initial notification to loading the aircraft with personnel, gear and equipment. "In the event we get a prepare-to-deploy order, we have to be capable of getting ourselves out the door with short notice and internal assets, meaning the majority of our support is coming out of our brigade," said Maj. Kareem J. Toomer, the brigade's support operations officer.

Attendees honored fallen heroes by participating in the 5th Annual Run for the Fallen, a tribute event that involved a 3.2-mile run or 2-mile walk.

    The moon still hovers in a predawn sky, visibility is low but the distinct sound of Soldiers adjusting their kits, boots and gear can still be strongly heard. They step off into the dark, the first of many in the next 12- miles, which has to be to be finished in under three hours time. This is the Toughest Air Assault Soldier Competition. Soldiers from each brigade are tested on their physical stamina, attention to detail and knowledge of tactical aerial operations. By day's end, one team will be the Toughest Air Assault Soldiers in Fort Campbell.
