Manas Airmen remember Sept. 11

Col. Harrison Smith and the U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Marie L. Yovanovitch reflect with Airman First Class Jessica Taylor and Staff Sgt. Dustin Woodworth at Manas Air Base, Kyrgyzstan, Sept. 11 at the memorial for Peter J. Ganci, the New York fire chief who gave his life coordinating the rescue response to the World Trade Center attack six years ago. Many locals still refer to the American military base in Kyrgyzstan as Ganci Air Base. The base continues to support the ongoing operations in Afghanistan as a logistics hub for the effort, providing aerial refueling with its squadron of KC-135 Stratotankers and supporting cargo and passenger movement to and from the country. Colonel Harrison is commander of the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing. Airman Taylor is a firefighter with the 376th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron. Sergeant Woodworth is a defender with the 376th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Les Waters)
