Brigadier General Johnny R. Miller assumed duties as the Assistant Adjutant General - Army, Illinois National Guard in January 2011. In this assignment, he assists the Adjutant General in the command and control of the units of the Illinois Army National Guard.

General Miller holds a Master's Degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College and a Bachelor's Degree from Southern Illinois University. 

General Miller was commissioned in 1984 through the ROTC Early Commissioning Program from Wentworth Military Academy. His first assignment was a Platoon Leader for Combat Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 130th Infantry in Carterville, Illinois.  He has held various command and staff positions throughout his career to include Company Commander, D Company, 3rd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment in Marion; Battalion S1, 3rd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery in Marion; Brigade Plans Officer, 65th Troop Command Brigade in Springfield; Battalion S3, 3rd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery in Marion;  Battalion Executive Officer and Battalion Commander for 3rd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery in Marion; Brigade Executive Officer, 33rd Brigade Combat Team, Urbana; Brigade Commander, 65th Troop Command Brigade, Springfield; Senior Liaison Officer TF White Eagle, and J3 Illinois National Guard.

General Miller's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Bronze Hourglass, M Device, and Numeral 2, Army Service Ribbon Overseas Service Ribbon with Numeral 2, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, NATO Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Silver Medal of the Polish Armed Forces, and various awards and decorations from the Illinois Army National Guard.

General Miller's civic affiliations include member of the National Guard Association of the United States, National Guard Association of Illinois, Field Artillery Association of the United States, US Army War College Alumni Association, and Veterans of Foreign Wars
